Tony Norwell - My Dad lyrics

My dad – he was a good one - but never knew his dad and mum; Brought up by folks who meant him well – he was luckier than some. At least he knew some love the way - that not all children do – But my dad ne’er got over that - perhaps like me and you. He went through his childhood like some poor motherless child; It made him strong – it made him weak – it made him sometimes wild. When it came to war in Europe he thought the allies needed him - He jumped aboard a ship and sailed to England on a whim. My dad – I loved my dad – in ways I couldn’t always show. It seemed that I was with him then in sun and rain and snow. His pain and sorrow was mine as well - though I never found a way – To show him how I loved him so - I just could never say. He met mum while working near her in dear old London town – And they both got married before the German bombs fell all around. They sent him off to Burma to build bridges there and roads – So far from home - where’er that was - they both bore a heavy load. Though he wanted to help in wartime - yet he didn’t want to fight – Still he saw things that hurt him so, they haunted him by night. Like so many others then who ‘survived’ the seeming endless pain – It injured him and made it hard to live a peacetime life again. In civvy street he chased jobs that brought work so he could live – Feed his growing family - he had so much life and love to give. Like some of us he chased rainbows for some little of his time – But did the best he could for all of us and helped us toe the line. Now it hurts (me) to watch those who think they were sometimes hurt (by him) - By how they think he was to them – with their mem’ries fading dim. The things that made him what he was may ne’er be wished on us - Yet we think we have the right to judge him and many others thus. So dad, it won’t be too long now before we meet again – I can’t wait to show you all the love I should have shown you when – We were together on this earth perchance as parent and as son – For I’m still learning how to love though my time is almost done… *** Thanks Tony Norwell for these lyrics
