Any Directorial Message to the video? - What was the mission with this video and what was it supposed to convey? - Is this an imagined video on abusive relationships? Is this a sympathetic take on abusive relationships? WE CAN GUARANTEE THAT THE ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP WILL LEAD THE MAJORITY OF THE COVERAGE (BESIDES THE BURNING BABY), SO WOULD BE GOOD TO HAVE A POV ON THIS - Why was the baby burning? What is the metaphor behind this? Ok we'll I can much better answer all these questions with the history of my involvement with the song first and foremost, and then my take and journey. I was in Germany filming when I heard the song. It struck me, both for its tone and depth, but also for its ability to feel like an authentic throwback, to a bygone era of who the f** knows when. I had the song playing in the background constantly. It fit what I was filming at the time. So it sorta became a soundtrack to my prep out there. Which was roughly 3 weeks. The hotel I was staying at in kolon was built very close to a taschen library And so as part of the decor of the hotel they always had all these beautiful art books laying around the lobby. I stumbled across a book of Hellenic art. In that book I found a chapter dedicated to a statue of Aphrodite of Milo's, and got lost in it. Not just the beauty of the Venus de milo statue. But the story of its acquisition by France. French sailors had to fight Greek brigands for possession. In the mêlée the statue was roughly dragged across rocks to the ship, breaking off both arms, and the sailors refused to go back to search for them. I thought that was ill, there was something there in the jealousy of both sides. And the voiceless god in the middle. I was blessed to be working with Lars Von Trier at the time. A god in his own right. I love him. He's a good man. And an incredible artist. He creates a family on his sets, he is very sociable and warm and more than anything Lars loves to toss ideas around. He was also very aware of my connection to music and visual culture. He loves collaborative creation and encourages involvement, so I started throwing him ideas of a scene, not for a video. Just a hypothetical scene, for our movie. This led of course to other topics, domestic abuse in history and so on.... We never found anything for the film But in my conversations with Lars he would always throw me other ways of looking at it. He was also very forthcoming with lost films, references and videos of his own. He made a film length version of "Medea" when he was around my age. And so he was very encouraging towards my wanting to explore topics like this myself behind the camera. So between the magic of timing and having a Genius as a bounce board I wrote a script and contacted the band. When I think domestic, I feel love When I think violence, I feel haunted "Haunted love" for me was about lovers pushing each other to the edge And how jealousy can make a person snap. Esthetic was Barry Lyndon meets David Lynch I was taken by my experience with Alma Har'el on our sigour ross piece and wanted to inject dance into my visuals. But I wanted dark. d**h. In a dance so we created a "butoh" inspired dance. Its a dark kind of movement. It typically involves playful and grotesque imagery, taboo topics, extreme or absurd environments, and is traditionally performed in white body makeup with slow hyper-controlled motion, with or without an audience. There is no set style, and it may be purely conceptual with no movement at all. So I thought a women loosing her mind might be inspired to "butoh" privately.
