African Americans throughout the years have made gradual strides towards societal inclusion. A few key factors, such as the unification, intelligence, and creativity of ma**ive black movements dictated whether or not negros could be a contributing factor in American society. From the 1940s onto the 1980s, progressive black men and women were joining civil rights movements with other activist. Some groups practiced peaceful protests and even attacked the issues of civil rights in legal battles. Through these practices more Americans became aware of the racial injustice African Americans endured. Televised speeches and rallies also formed an idea of what civil rights figures like Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned for blacks and whites in America. The end result of the civil rights movement was to strengthen the morale of African Americans everywhere in order to improve social and political inequality in America for future generations. 1941- The Tuskegee Air Squadron are created by the U.S Army. In 1943, the Tuskegee Air Squadron fly their first mission in Italy. *Excerpt- "If we accept and acquiesce in the face of discrimination, we accept the responsibility ourselves and allow those responsible to salve their conscience by believing that they have our acceptance and concurrence. We should, therefore, protest openly everything... that smacks of discrimination or slander." 1947- Jackie Robinson breaks the color barrier in major league baseball. He broke the barrier on the Brooklyn Dodgers April 15, 1947. *Excerpt- "I don't think that I or any other Negro, as an American citizen, should have to ask for anything that is rightfully his. We are demanding that we just be given the things that are rightfully ours and that we're not looking for anything else." 1952- Malcolm X becomes a minister of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X goes on to become one of the most influential figures in the civil rights movement. *Excerpt- "You can't separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom." 1953- Hulan Jack receives the title of Borough President of Manhattan. He is the first African American to hold this post. *Excerpt- "Be as proud of your race today as our fathers were in days of yore. We have beautiful history, and we shall create another in the future that will astonish the world." 1954- Thurgood Marshall argues that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional in Brown vs. Board of Education. The Supreme Court rules in favor of Marshall's client Linda Brown. *Excerpt- "I would like to say that each lawyer on the other side has made it clear as to what the position of the state was on this, and it would be all right possibly but for the fact that this is so crucial. There is no way you can repay lost school years." 1955- Rosa Parks, a member of the NAACP, refuses to give up her seat and move to the back of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She is arrested and the Montgomery Bus Boycotts begin. *Excerpt- “The once dormant and quiescent Negro community was now fully awake." 1957- The SCLC was founded by Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin, Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, and others.Martin Luther King Jr. becomes first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. *Excerpt- "The question is not if we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. The nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists." 1960- The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee is founded. In 1966, the leader of SNCC is Stokely Carmichael. *Excerpt- "An organization which claims to be working for the needs of a community - as SNCC does - must work to provide that community with a position of strength from which to make its voice heard. This is the significance of black power beyond the slogan."
