the fog slipped through the
gates as they were yawning
advanced across the lawn but
never reached the house because
the lights came on
and split it right in two
the gravel made way
for shoes that were muddy
shoes that somebody
got himself the day before
to impress the woman he was coming to
the waves rushed to meet
the banks of his own sea
there was no one before you
there was no one before me
the rust was cast
from the door as it was opened
it sounded like a casket
but the wind picked up and mashed it
who knows which sound was meant to make it through
the frost framed the window
making it hard to look out of
but that didn't matter
sometimes you know how things will end
sometimes you know when someone's in the room
the fight embraced
the great old tree
there was no one before you, there was no one before me
there was no one before you, there was no one before me
