Advance and retreat
You take a step towards me then shuffle your feet
Dancing in place
And your face says it's on
A sentiment your mouth contradicts
It's a pretty neat trick to turn gold into lead
Snatch a chill from the jaws of such heat
All in the name of an artful conceit:
The sovereign advance and retreat
Advance and retreat
You say you don't like when the words are too sweet
So you dip them in acid
Then impa**ively ask why the skin's melting off of my face
Just one taste of your poison's a pretty stiff drink:
Surrender disguised as defeat
I'll follow your lead
Take a shoulder-width stance for the dance of advance and retreat
We collide and we rebound-
Integral but also discrete
We can cover so much ground
Or we can settle for the same few square feet...
Advance and retreat
You said you liked sailing
I sent my whole fleet
A rookie mistake,
It's the kind I make best
I confess: I was calling your bluff
Enough is enough
Though you've sung the same song all along
It still sound incomplete
When you catch yourself being too warm
You instantly institute sweeping reform
Put the word on the street:
Meet the new boss- advance and retreat
