Sitting in the park on a sunny day
I watched the children who came to play
How lively are the young girls and boys
Pulling little red wagons filled with toys
As parents watch with glistening eyes
Like contest winners beholding their prize
All the children played in the sand
Except a little girl with a doll in one hand
She shuffled off and played alone
Who she was remained unknown
She had a bruised face and a broken arm
What, I wondered could have done her this harm
She didn't look healthy or happy at all
She was almost as battered as her ragged doll
A doll is supposedly a girls best friend
And yet, she hit hers time and again
What's wrong with her? I needed to know
So, I walked over to her and said hello
I didn't ask her if she had taken a fall
Instead, I asked her why she beats her doll
She hugged her doll who had a bandaged head
"Because I love her." I cried when she said
