It used to be too hard to ignore,
The hundreds of metrocards that filled every New York city subway station floor,
It was so bad,
You had to jump over a pile,
Just to get to the turnstyle,
Then last March,
The MTA enforced a $1 green fee surcharge,
For all new metro cards,
I know you probably think this new fee is a little harsh,
But, it has made a lot of people reuse their card,
In fact,
Just to be exact, here is an interesting stat,
Purchases of new cards are down 71 percent,
From the time it was implemented,
This has given the city many economic and environmental benefits,
Twenty four million dollars made,
Less litter, more landfill space,
Three million dollars in card stock and eight cashier positions saved,
Now,
The city should enforce a similar strategy for litter on the ground,
This might help New York City go from the dirtiest to one of the cleanest cities around.
