It Gets Better Project
The “It Gets Better” internet-based project and charitable organization was founded on December 10, 2010 by Don Savage, a syndicated columnist and author, and Terry Miller. To help gay youth realize that in the face of bullying it can get better, and to inspire hope when facing hara**ment, they posted YouTube videos in May 2011. They also used other media resources in order to reach a wider audience and convey their message of hope (through MTV, Logo, or radio stations)
The project was triggered by the suicide of Billy, who was called “f*g” multiple times by his cla**mates at school. The 15 year-old freshman in a high school in Indiana hanged himself in his barn, and was found by his mother the next day. A number of similar cases involving the suicide of a gay teen show that this is a widespread phenomenon, and have lead to the creation of Dan Savage's project
They direct a message not only to the LGBT population, but to the entire nation, saying we should accept differences in a diverse community. If we are not ready to welcome differences, then we don't build a community in a friendly and inclusive way. The founders of the project invite us to support the project by donating. recording, sharing our story, pledging, wearing, buying, sharing their book and staying connected
