A-slavin' and toilin' as I was one day
The thought of my true love had led me astray
The day bein' over and night coming on
And away I ran with me cattle smock on!
When to my love's window, cryin': "Are you in bed?"
Soon as she heard me, she lifted her head
She lifted her head and she cried: "Is that John?"
"Oh yes, it's me with me cattle smock on!"
She opened the door and invited me in
"Draw off to the fire, love, and warm up your skin!"
The bedroom door opened and the blankets turned down
I rolled into bed with me cattle smock on!
We tumbled and tossed 'til the break of day
Forgettin' the hours, that we pa**ed away
Till my love, she jumped up and crying: "What have I done!
The baby will come with a cattle smock on!"
I chastised my true love for speakin' so wild
"You're a silly young girl, for you'll ne'er have a child
For all that we've done, will I reckon but fun!"
And I ran away with me cattle smock on!
So, come on you young maidens, where'er you may be
Remember the lairds, that are single and free
For their hearts do run light and their minds do run young
So beware of them, lairds with their cattle smocks on!
