[Intro: L-FRESH The LION]
Let me take you back. Way back
I want to tell you about some of my heroes
Some of Panjab's finest
Let's go
[Verse 1: L-FRESH The LION]
Let me tell you about stories you ain't read about
Coz some of our lions never had the chance to get it out
This history has become so easy to edit out
This is a slice, listen close as I tell it now
From the land of Maharaja's, lion's and queens
We're descendant of a people who ascended to royalty
But not just in material wealth and fine j**els
But of those who served humanity honestly and loyally
There was this one who's name will live on for years
A fierce warrior with a mind sharp as their spear
A true visionary that excelled beyond peers
When enemies caught sight of em they would tremble in fear
But beyond being fighters there's more who came for
Like those who opened kitchens where free meals were made for all
This is some of the history I take a page from
There's power when reminded of the lineage that you came from
[Chorus break 1: L-FRESH The LION]
We're not alone
Our ancestors they walk with us
That's why we're never alone
So let me tell you about this one
[Verse 2: L-FRESH The LION]
The most feared person in Punjab, the British were terrified
The greatest threat to their plans of conquer and divide
By gathering the people a resistance was organised
To protect and secure our sovereign way of life
An unlikely figure to get our armies to mobilise
But the British hit home and stole the most dearest prize
Eyes were watered but the pride was never thwarted
Even when imprisoned behind bars where scars were courted
But with wise planning, escape came by surprise
A prison break which forced this rebel into exile
Spent years away from home but the fire never died
So much so, it inspired a young phoenix to rise
That phoenix was that prize, the heir to our throne
Who, despite our rebel's d**h, fought to reclaim our home
This is some of the history I take a page from
There's power when reminded of the lineage you came from
[Chorus break 2: L-FRESH The LION]
We're not alone
We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us
And whether we realise it or not
We're never alone
[Verse 3: L-FRESH The LION]
Never forget where you come from
Your history is something you can't run from
I see you struggle and striving trying to be a star
If anything your history will help you rise to become one
Embrace it coz then you'll know what you stand for
And if you get treated as lesser then you'll know to demand more
Like this hero who was part of a movement
That won the right to vote for women which set a global blueprint
But of all the greatest inspirations of mine
There was one who took a leap from the motherland and left it all behind
Travelled across seas, worked to the bone endlessly
And with an honest hand established a dynasty in a foreign land
These people, they gave it their all
And never caved in when the struggle was tall
Inspired by their past even if the pages were torn
It's because of them I was able to be born
[Outro: L-FRESH The LION]
So I suppose I should tell you the names of these people, right?
That first person I spoke about, her name was Mai Bhago Ji:
One of the fiercest, most powerful leaders and warriors in Panjab's history
That second person, her name's Mata Khivi Ji:
An amazing role model and inspiration when it comes to serving the community; helped establish one of the most well known institutions of serving people and giving people free food around the world
The next one, that's Rani Jindan:
She's also known as the rebel queen of Panjab. Man, she united the people at one of the most crucial times in Panjab's history
And then it was Princess Sophia Singh, who's a suffragette; fought for the right for women to gain the vote in the UK
And the last person, one of my greatest inspirations: that's my mum
I love you Ma
